Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
About Our Church
With a longing and zealous faith, the Jacobite Christian community in Colorado started a congregation named St. Ephrem Jacobite Christian Church of Colorado by H.E. Samuel Mor Athanasios in the 1980s. Rev. Fr. Bobby Joseph served as the first vicar. In the1990s we used the Ethiopian Orthodox church facility for six months. In June 1995, Fr. Joseph conducted a Holy Mass at the residence of Mr. Tharian Mattamana. This gathering served as the organizing foundation for the church we know today. In 1996, the church was renamed St. Thomas Jacobite Church of Colorado by H.E. Mor Nichalovous Metropolitan. Rev. Fr. Mathai Thekkadath was appointed vicar of the church in 1997. Over the next several years, services were held in rotation at member's homes.
In 2002, the Very Rev. Fr. Aby Kurian Pathickal was selected as the blessed leader to this congregation (later he became our Archdiocesan Archbishop H. E. Mor Theethose Yeldho). Under his efficient leadership, a constitution was registered under the new name St. Mary's Jacobite Syriac Orthodox Church.
In December 2003, a church building was purchased primarily using member donations. There were 12 founding member families: Korah and Anu Abraham, Kuruvila and Mary Markose, Baiju and Helani Mathew, George and Chinamma Mathai, Mathai and Sosamma Mathai, Tharian and Sara Mattamana, Joy and Mercy Mattamana, Joy and Susy Mulamkuzhiyil, Sonny and Mercy Odollil, Lony and Susan Thomas, John and Mary Vattappilil, and Joseph and Chinnamma Veepanattu.
The church building at 3410 West Walsh Place in Lakewood, Colorado was inaugurated on May 22, 2004 by H.E. Mor Theethose Yeldho (Metropolitan Archbishop of Malankara Syriac Orthodox Church of North America) and attended by H.E. Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim (Archbishop of Syriac Orthodox Church of the Western USA).
After the inauguration, the following priests have served as vicars of our growing church: Rev. Fr. Babu Peringol in 2003; Rev. Fr. James Scaria in 2004 (who later became bishop H. G. Mor Aphrem Mathews); Rev. Fr. Rev. Jacob Joseph in 2006 (guest vicar), Fr. George Parathuvayalil from 2004 to 2016 (the first resident priest); Rev. Fr. Eldho PP from 2016 to 2017, Rev. Fr. K.V. Paulose from 2018 to 2019, Rev. Fr. Mathew Jacob from 2019 to Mar 2022, Rev. Fr. Sebu Paul Vendrappaillil from Mar 2022 till Sep 2022, Rev. Fr. Shijo Paul from Sep 2022 till Dec 2023 and Rev. Fr. Robin Kurian from Jan 2024 till date.
We now have weekly services in Malayalam and English to fulfill the needs of the faithful Syrian Christian community in Denver. The church continues to grow steadily and has a solid foundation with Sunday School, St. Mary's Women's League and Youth associations.
The vicar and the managing committee of St. Mary's Jacobite Church of Colorado would like to take this occasion to especially thank all people in the US and all over the world for their donations in aiding in the development of our church over the years. We wish you all the best and God's blessings now and always.
